The organic path, an evidence
In search of authenticity, with a deep attachment to the history of sugar and rum in Martinique, A 1710 rums aim to bring out all the nobility of man’s handiwork and respect for nature… An approach that makes organic a matter of course.
In 1710, an exception in the rum-making landscape
Planting the sugarcane, ensuring its maintenance, and hand-harvesting… Gestures we take pride in. They are a humble contribution by A 1710 rums to the enhancement and protection of our environment.
We are committed to harvesting the right volume of sugarcane every day of the year; the amount we need for the daily production of a small quantity of precious rums made from freshly cut cane…
In a context – both in Martinique and elsewhere – where sugarcane cultivation is increasingly mechanized, our small-scale organic production stands out as atypical.
A pristine plot of land.
A 1710 rums are made in the heart of the Habitation du Simon. Just a stone’s throw away from the mill and distillery, there is an organic sugarcane field.
The sugarcane enjoys a pristine plot that has not been cultivated in the past three generations. We cultivate the cane without any additives that are not natural: organic matter is provided by the manure of our mules, and a nitrogen supplement is applied to the field.
Procured from a certified ORGANIC farming supplier. Sodding is managed by means of a ground cover consisting of cane straw from the previous harvest. Any potential rodents, who are fond of sweet cane, are repelled by our environmentally-friendly traps designed with respect for the environment.
A work that is approved and certified.
Our plot is ECOCERT certified.
The ECOCERT certificate is issued in accordance with Article 29, paragraph 1 of European Regulation No. 834/2007 on Organic Agriculture and the current certification program, as defined by the relevant circular from INAO (French National Institute of Origin and Quality). The authenticity and validity of this certificate can be verified on the ecocert.fr website.
Short chronology of the organic journey...
In 2010, Yves de Pompignan, encouraged by his father, former founder of the Centre Technique de la Canne et du Sucre de la Martinique, embarked on the project of building a small distillation unit for white rum with its noble aromas and delicate flavors.
In 2015, at Habitation du Simon, we planted sugarcane on a pristine plot of land that, considering the history of the past three generations, had never been cultivated before.
In 2016, A 1710 rums obtained their ECOCERT certificates.
